WHAT TO EXPECT
As a humanistic therapist and midwife, I believe the relationship between client and counsellor is key to the therapy having a positive impact for change. Working with you, I seek to offer a safe space, to establish and regularly review a workable contract with you, and ensure confidentiality.
An initial session involves discussing a plan for the work together that suits you, as well as listening to your current experience and concerns. There is no obligation for you to proceed past this meeting. This session will last for an hour; future sessions will generally last for about 50 minutes.
I have experience of counselling couples as well as individuals, and of providing both short-term, solution-focused therapy as well as working longer-term. Typically, short-term counselling might be for 6-8 sessions. This will depend on your individual circumstances, and will be agreed with you as part of your contract.
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy provide further independent information about the counselling process here. I work within these guidelines, and their professional standards.
”Ruth created a space where I could confront and work through my complicated feelings following a termination. Her kind and empathetic nature allowed me to be totally honest with no fear of judgement, which helped me to address how I truly felt and how best to move forward with my life. I will be forever grateful for Ruth’s time and support during, what started as, an incredibly difficult time.”
